Dill (Anethum graveolens) ‘Diana’
Dill is a versatile herb that adds a fresh flavour to various dishes, including pickles, salads, sauces, and garnishes.
Sow Dill in the early spring or summer, after the last expected spring frost. It loves well-draining, organic matter-rich soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 but will accommodate to most conditions except very wet and/0r acid substrates. Sow seeds directly into the garden or a large container, aiming for plants 10-12 inches apart. Thin the seedlings to prevent overcrowding and poor air circulation. A sunny spot is most ideal, avoid very shady sites.
Water regularly, especially during germination and if necessary as getting established. Support the plants with stakes or cages, especially in windy areas. Pinch back the top of the plant when it reaches 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) tall, to encourage more leafy growth. Harvest leaves after the plant is 8 inches tall, using scissors to snip off the leaves as needed. Harvest seeds when the flower heads turn brown and the seeds are ripe.
Plants left to flower and seed are spectacularly beautiful, adding interest and height to the flower border, as well as supporting beneficial insects.
